Parity is when you get a case on your cube that is impossible to achieve on 3x3, such as two edges being swapped with no corners affected. This is impossible to do on 3x3, therefore it is a parity. Another type of parity you can get is an edge parity, where there is a case in which making an edge on a big cube is difficult because a piece is swapped or is in an awkward position.
